Fatah El Islam Fighters Still Standing in Northern Lebanon

Filed under: Uncategorized — barabie @ 11:47 pm

Tripoli is still as tense as it was when the Nahr El Bared hostilities started on May 21, 2007. The Lebanese army had announced victory over the Fatah El Islam fighters on June 21 after they took over several of their positions but the remaining fighters had retreated deeper into the buildings of the camp.

Today, two more soldiers died raising the number to 92 since the hostilities started. Today, the FEI fighters are apparently trying to ease the military pressure by using Al Qaidas style of fighting as they have unleashed Katyusha rockets at the army.

A total of nine to twelve rockets crashed into nearby villages, as well as in orange groves security officials and the National News Agency said. The rockets caused some damage but no casualties, said the officials. It has more of a psychological effect then a military effect, said a LAF military official. Fatah Islam gunmen also traded heavy fire with the troops circling them in the refugee camp, soldiers said.
