  1. First, it is generally agreed that the number of Jews killed in the Holocaust is between 5.1 and 5.7 million, rather than the 6 million figure that often used until the 1990’s.

    Second, estimates on the total number of people who died in the Holocaust are based primarily on documentation of birth certificates, marriages, etc in the various affected countries. The assumption used to be that every Jew that died (or mysteriously disappeared, never to be heard from again) in Poland during the period of the Holocaust was killed at Auschwitz. Now people realize that the importance of Auschwitz within the context of the Holocaust was not as great as once was thought, and that about 1.5 million Jews who were initially thought to have been killed at Auschwitz instead died in the ghettos or were summarily executed rather than sent to concentration camps.
